TWELVE DAYS AFTER CHRISTMAS

The first day back at work/school/daycare after a vacation away is always hard, but I find that recovering from the holiday season is as hard, even if you don't have to worry about jet lag.

Inspired by the twelve days before Christmas, we came up with a list of things to do within twelve days after Christmas that might help us better prepare for the first day back. We're usually in a go-go-go mode to get all the gifts and event planning ready for the holidays and when the adrenaline goes away, we just want to sit back and relax for a few days. Before you know it, it's 8pm Sunday evening and the kids are not acting like they're ready to fall asleep just yet.

The good news is that it's Friday today and everything's back to normal, proof that you can get through it, list or no list. And now you have the weekend to prepare for the new winter schedule. In our case: Swimming on Fridays, Hockey on Saturdays and Skiing on Sundays, and throw some occasional Prenatal Yoga and Crossfit for Mom&Dad in there. Change is good!
  1. Sort through all the new toys and hide some of them so the fun lasts at least until Valentines Day;
  2. Find out ahead of time if there are any changes to the garbage truck schedule so you don't have to store 2 weeks of garbage in the garage, away from the feisty urban squirrels;
  3. Put away the Christmas decorations and tree. Preferably while the kids are not at home so it doesn't take double the time and you don't find tree needles in their bed;
  4. Get ready for your last holiday gift: that ginormous January credit card bill;
  5. Return all the items you haven't given. Extended return policies are great, but even better when you keep track of the receipts and deadlines;
  6. If you still have some money left, buy Christmas decorations at great discounts. I found these limited-edition Scandinavian-inspired walnut ornaments (picture above) at 75% off at Crate and Barrel. Can't wait to put them on the tree next year!
  7. Try to get the kids to come back to the regular sleep routine at least a day before and talk often about their teachers and friends so they look forward to going back;
Have a good weekend!
